What does the "file" command say about the .pat file?

  $ file *.pat

In file's "magic" file (/usr/share/file/magic)
these comments appear:

  # XCF: file(1) magic for the patterns used in the GIMP (.pat),
  # # developed by Spencer Kimball and Peter Mattis
  # #       ('Bucky' LaDieu, n...@vt.edu)

So maybe it is a gimp pattern file and not something from photoshop.
