Thanks to you and all who pointed out that sagemath works for them.
This encouraged me to look more carefully into the problem,
and I found that I had installed "enthought canopy" a year or so ago,
and this installation had appended lines to my .bashrc
affecting the operation of Ipython.

On removing these lines sagemath worked fine.
