Firstly, its NOT chpasswd but root@localhost # password and / or
root@localhost # passwd {USERNAME} 

Secondly, /home has possible USER SPECIFIC pam.d/ sshd/ gnupg/ and other
assorted configs that can be VERY relevant for a rescue system.
