so I guess, I have to put those firmware files in /lib/firmware.
But I am just not sure if this will let the OS find my wifi.

FWIW I had a similar sudden loss of wifi last year with an old Broadcom-
equipped HP laptop running kubuntu. No firmware load. Still not
solved, but at the time it would connect when running an SL7 live DVD.
