I'm curious where you are that has such an unusual topic filter. :-)

So, I would like to know if there are members on this list who know how to get around
such blocking by these hotspots? Are there FF add-ons that can do it?

The easiest way that I usually use is the proxy feature in ssh. Connect to a remote ssh server and add the "-D <portnum>" option. This creates a socks proxy at localhost:<portnum> which you can configure in the network settings. All http connections will get tunnelled out through the remote server. By default, Firefox will use the system-defined proxy setting. I also have a Gnome extension (Jam-proxy switcher) that gives me an icon on the top bar for easily switching between using the proxy or not and quick access to the network settings.
