Are you using the lightdm desktop manager and pam-kwallet? This may be related to the other issues this combination causes (seems like it's poking its nose into a lot of things). If you are, edit the /etc/pam.d/lightdm file and comment out the lines that reference pam_kwallet.so and pam_kwallet5.so (just stick a "#" in front of the lines), save the file, log out and back in and try your operation again.
