Well, for two days since I booted back to old kernel there
have been no crashes of the computer or the router, and USB
backups have been working OK. It is looking like it was the
kernel doing it, but how it can crash the router is still
very mysterious.

Must be that disguised code inserted in linux by evil hackers
that completely rewrote in a totally obfuscated fashion the
entire network stack under the guise of improving network
performance by 0.0001%, but really attempts to attack routers
from the inside rather than the outside :-).
