That entire directory can be deleted. It was used by fedup, the forerunner to "dnf

Old log files aren't used and can be discarded.

/var/log/rkhunter/ has 184 files, most are from prior years. Am I correct in
assuming that I can delete the files from prior years?
Yes.

Is there already available some automated deletion of /var/log/ logs (and its
sub-directories other than "journal")?
Yes. You should see....
systemctl status logrotate.timer as active (waiting)
The control over what is rotated is determined by entries in /etc/logrotate.d
Question 5:
Are there any other parts of the '/' filesystem that I should clean out and are worth the trouble?
Not as far as I'm concerned.
