We need more data.  Have a look at https://www.smartmontools.org/ticket/594?cversion=0&cnum_hist=7 <https://www.smartmontools.org/ticket/594?cversion=0&cnum_hist=7>. Bargain USB enclosures are often junk.   If they are powered by the USB port they often draw excessive power leading to erratic behaviour.  USB3 uses frequencies that often cause RF interference with other devices, bluetooth, etc. so need careful attention to shielding and may be susceptible to RF interference
if there are RF sources nearby.

1.  does smartmontools recognize the device?
2.  can you transfer the disk to another known good system/enclosure for testing?
3.  are you using a limited power PC (RPi, laptop, etc.)?
4.  does the external drive+enclosure work using a USB2 port?
5.  does the enclosure have its own power source or is it powered from USB?
Wow... what a great answer! Thank you very much.

So
1. smartctl failed: No such device
2. I could... maybe ...there is a sticker voiding the warranty if I open the case. I do have another (very old) great case, or at least it used to be. So once my warranty claim is sorted out I can do that. Just not right now. And maybe the other case got old (just like me) 3. It's currently plugged to a Thinkpad X1 3rd gen but I actually want to plug it to a rpi... 4. I have a USB hub 2.0 connected to the machine with my 512 logitech keyboard and it stops at detection and reset high-speed USB device number 8 using xhci_hcd. So I guess it doesn't work?
5. Powered by USB only.

Now the disk was indeed super cheap. Do you mean that if I get a good case I could just plug it and be happy? Would I need an extra power supply as well considering I intend to plug it in a rpi?

Thank you so very much.

I'll add one thing which may be important. I have an old(er) disk which I plugged in this old casing and connected it to the rpi: stopped working very quickly. I plug it into my X1 and no problem. So I thought the disk/enclosure was old. Maybe now I'm thinking it could be power requirements? The old casing has a "hole" to add an extra power supply so maybe it would work just fine with it.

What's your take on this?

Thank you.
