The configs in /var/run/Networkmanager. There's a resolv.conf and a no-stub- resolv.conf in there.
why NM would ever check if /etc/resolv.conf was a symlink. Where is that documented?
It sure doesn't overwrite it when it's a symlink to systemd's resolver. You removed the symlink, and it happily scribbled over /etc/resolv.conf, so it must be checking that.
