.drpm files are delta RPMs. Small differences between one version of a RPM and another can be sent as delta RPMs instead of downloading and installing the newest full RPM. It's a toss-up whether you're better doing this, and the computer grinding its gears to deal with it, or just downloading full RPMs and directly installing them (I've seen the latter being quicker on high speed broadband, and the first quicker on slow dial-up internet).
