I've had a Logitech wireless kb for years and it has been completely
reliable (except that a couple of days ago it developed a stuck key
which can't be fixed). You might try installing solaar:

   Description :
Solaar is a device manager for Logitech's Unifying Receiver peripherals. It
is
able to pair/unpair devices to the receiver and, for most devices, read
battery
   status.

[As an aside, today I installed a new kb, this time one of Logitech's
MX line, and it too worked immediately (with the supplied dongle, also
on a USB hub), though it also supports Bluetooth and can hardware
switch between up to 3 systems.

It has some extra functionality which requires special drivers, but
only for Windows and Mac of course. There doesn't appear to be a
specific settings option for it (under KDE).]
