I have my suspicions along those lines, too.  The oddball thing is if I
do this same USB tethering experiment on another PC (running Fedora
39), it worked.

I have been intrigued by such things, though I wonder how hostile a
phone carrier in Australia would be to users doing that.

That's a good idea.  Convoluted, but do-able.  I might give that a bash
over the weekend.
