So I have people saying I should use ddrescue, and people saying I
should use testdisk.  Please come to an agreement on how to best
    recover
what I can from my stick of back-ups!

ddrescue is used to get the best possible copy of the contents.  Typically this is used to create a disk image file.  Testdisk is used to examine the contents of a disk or image file in the hope of recreating the missing or damaged structure or locating
blocks of data for an important file.

See: <https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Step_By_Step>
for examples.

I did see this.
I've been busy trying to catch up on outdoor work, and could not get to this properly today.  I did give that web page a skim.  It definitely looks better than the testdisk man page.  I will give it a good read next week, when I'm adequately close to caught up outdoors.
