Since upgrading to F42 in the Spring, I have seen apparently random GDM
lockups. In these situations, system could be sshed into to kill the
processes and reboot.
Finally decided to look into this and--long story short--it turns out I
did not have the RPMFusion Nvidia drivers installed
All the following was done with kernel-6.16.5-200.fc42.x86_64 active.
NOTE: 6-16-5
# lspci | grep VGA
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation AD107
[GeForce RTX 4060] (rev a1)
Now, I'd have sworn I was using the NVidia stuff in F41, but can't
document that. So, I looked and found the Nouveau driver active and no
NVidia install.
So, I installed 'akmod-nvidia' (akmod-nvidia-575.64.05-2.fc42.x86_64).
A bunch of pre- and co-requisites were installed and the install
appeared to have completed.
# rpm -qa | grep -i nvidia
nvidia-gpu-firmware-20250808-1.fc42.noarch
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-cuda-libs-575.64.05-2.fc42.x86_64
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs-575.64.05-2.fc42.x86_64
nvidia-modprobe-575.64.05-1.fc42.x86_64
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-kmodsrc-575.64.05-2.fc42.x86_64
nvidia-settings-575.64.05-1.fc42.x86_64
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-xorg-libs-575.64.05-2.fc42.x86_64
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-575.64.05-2.fc42.x86_64
akmod-nvidia-575.64.05-2.fc42.x86_64
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-power-575.64.05-2.fc42.x86_64
Among the pre-reqs installed were kernel-devel.
I left the system idle for several hours before rebooting it. When
booting, an error message flashed by indicating the Nvidia mods failed
and system fell back to Nouveau. Found this in journalctl output:
Sep 10 08:14:40 osprey systemd[1]: Finished nvidia-fallback.service -
Fallback to nouveau as nvidia did not load.
Curiously, paying more attention to reboot shows that kernel 6-16-5 is
NOT shown on the grub boot menu, and the system defaults to kernel 6-16-4
Further:
# akmods --rebuild
Checking kmods exist for 6.16.4-200.fc42.x86_64 [ OK ]
Files needed for building modules against kernel
6.16.4-200.fc42.x86_64 could not be found as the following
directories are missing:
/usr/src/kernels/6.16.4-200.fc42.x86_64/
/lib/modules/6.16.4-200.fc42.x86_64/build/Is the correct kernel-devel
package installed?
This makes some sense since the install was done while kernel 6-16-5 was
active and 6-16-4 is now running.
(Possibly related: Google Chrome does not work on the system--Chrome
processes are running but the application never opens onscreen. Ditto
for the Back-in-Time snapshot application. FireFox and Thunderbird do work.)
Suggestions on where to go from here? Thanks.
