If it is getting the correct IP address then DNS resolution is
working.  Next concern would be routing - do you have issues
connecting to other systems?  You can try "traceroute mailserver" on
both systems and compare the results.

If routing is good, is it possible the mailserver is blocking your IP
for some reason?
