Either the defaults are in the app code, or in /usr/lib somewhere.
Have a look at output of

rpm -ql dnf5

and look for .conf files.

Thanks Barry, I issued that command but it doesn't help. There is a compatibility.conf file which doesn't have any color specifications and the other 6 files are all compressed files with a .gz extension. The problem I have is that a "dnf upgrade" displays packages to be replaced in a color that is not listed in the color options in "man dnf5.conf", and with the options that are in there none of the options seem to be being honoured when /etc/dnf/dnf.conf contains different color specifications, hence the original question of where should they be specified. From what I'm seeing on the net I was specifying the option values incorrectly and what should be specified doesn't match what "man dnf.conf" specifies what the defaults are.
