Yep.  In most cases, probably all cases, the player cannot handle an
unmounted disc, it expects the operating system to have done that for
it.

There's another feature I forgot, with various players the "play disc"
feature can play an ISO file of a disc.  Which is handy for people who
make back-ups of their disc collection, and use their computer as a
jukebox (only having one file per disc to contend with).
