An early snow, while the trees still had their leaves, knocked out power all over. Some people did not get power restored for a week or more. I wold not consider that a war zone, though I guess you could say the problem came out out of the blue...

Backhoes do not just cut fiber optic cables... I saw a dump truck take out a power line when the driver did not lower the dump box before starting to drive away. I mean a real test, where you pull the plug on the UPS, and see if the system responds as it should. Does the system do a full shutdown before the power runs out? You can NOT count on the UPS status display or reports from a smart UPS if you have not had a power outage for a while. I have a UPS here that reported everything was fine, and that it could provide 1 hour of power at the current load level.
