Who knows? ;) If it is certain use cases that conflict, you can override completion by escaping the option. For example completion on a file with mplayer which does not have a conventional "media file" extension. $ mplayer \someweirdfile[TAB][TAB] someweirdfile1.ext someweirdfile2.ext As for the specific case of yum and rpm, you can specify ./path/to/file.
