Yeah, I had this problem too. Try this:
sudo /usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-vmx --new-sn xxx

Yes, that seems to have done the trick. I've wasted most of the day
fiddling with this. That probably would have enabled my trial
subscription to work had I known ...
