Apparently a captured Russian aircraft was found to be full of valve based equipment, to the bewilderment of those who caught it, wondering if they were really that far behind. Later they'd find out that it was deliberate, as that technology was more robust against EMP. At college, we were told an amusing tale about how the Russians had worked their way around the embargo of selling certain ICs to them. Empty pinball machines were found around their embassy, after they gutted them for the parts.
