What would be wrong with the usual method? Meaning, log in as an ordinary user, and elevate privileges using "su -" in a terminal and providing root password in a GUI when asked for it? I also remote login to my servers all the time, but I've never ever needed to do it as root. What makes it so unavoidable for you?
