Dave,

Did you check if a link exists in
~/.config/geany/geany_socket.something and delete it if it exists
(Important: when _all_ Geanys are closed)?

That link points to the socket in /run/user/etc etc, so if it is
deleted a new socket will be created with your user ownership.
