From your description, I suspect some trouble with the file-system access.
Could you try un-using the SD-card partition again, and selecting the
RAM file system for use as test? To do that, select the "ram fs" node in
the graph of the software menu and press the "Use" button there. Note
that this button is only visible as long as no other file system is
used. Once when using the RAM fs, do you see the presets appearing?
Are you able to select the system-shell preset now? As the RAM fs is
empty, this step needs to install the components via wifi. You can
follow the installation progress in the software-status tab.
Should the installation succeed, this would give you the principle
ability to inspect /report/log using vim. So you could look out for
errors related to the SD-card or the file system.
BTW, could you please share which exact image you are using (e.g., the
download URL)? So I could try following the same steps using the same image.
