There is no system catalogue that will tell you that a session temporary table exists. Ingres provides only SQL Type 1 temporary tables, and they are are supposed to be *really* light-weight. The cost of maintaining any catalogue information would noticeably affect performance. Most people either drop the table on spec and trap and ignore any resulting error, or they do an experimental select from the table they think might exist a trap the error. The SQL standard defines two other kinds of temporary table that do have catalogue entries, but Ingres doesn't (presently) implement those types.
