You might try Programmer's Notepad (pnotepad.org, 
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Programmer's_Notepad)... the source
language syntax highlighting and checking is really outstanding.  It's a 
Windows thing, so for Linux systems we use it
combined with WinSCP.
