you need to put your prefix at the beginning: PATH=/Users/lorenzodona/Desktop/openmpi-1.7.1/bin:$PATH LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/Users/lorenzodona/Desktop/openmpi-1.7.1/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
