I totally agree with you. Similar problems exist for the PHP PEAR
packages. I'm wondering if someone tested the packages before putting
them in the repo...

Use the --force option if you insist on installing a conflicting
package. Fixing the darn package to resolve the conflictswould be the
better solution.
