I would add another advantage:
the user is not always aware that the result of a function is a complex;
the typical case is the use of roots() when the expected result is real.
It sometimes causes problems as some other function
do not accept complex numbers as patrameters.
You are right.
This basic rationale (compared to the over-sophisticated I proposed...)
has been invoked many times and should have been enough to change
