Thanks for this and to all the other people who answered. 

Are there any plans to implement merging/aggregation of other parts of
the XML structure (i.e. other than dependencies) in the future? Is this
considered desirable or undersirable?

I'm also not sure what to expect in terms of the goals and pre/post
goals defined in the maven.xml files of my parent and child projects. It
appears to me from experiment that goals are inherited but postgoals are
not. What should I expect to happen?
