And to explain why it won't take the last. Since maven 2.0.9 all the core plugins are nailed down in the super pom. So old builds won't break when new versions are released. You are still advised to nail down all the plugins you use in your build including the core plugins. For all non-core plugins the LATEST release will be taken when you execute it without specifying a version.
