Take a look at PlexusUtils' FileUtils class:
http://plexus.codehaus.org/plexus-utils/apidocs/org/codehaus/plexus/util/FileUtils.html

Look at the getFileName() methods and variants.  They use DirectoryScanner
which handles "**" wildcards and such.
