appears that they border on the "intrinsically evil" and should be
avoided unless you have lots of time to waste and no deadlines to meet.
It appears that there are a few valid use cases for profiles.
However, people are usually trying to do something else with them that
causes endless grief until they stop.
If Wayne suggests that you are in the situation of misusing profiles,
you probably should stop.
It is unlikely that you will get better advice here.

Does anybody know what the problem is here?
Find a way to do what you need without involving a profile (more
modules is the general approach rather than profiles) and things will
most likely work better for you.
