Dear Brett
I really appreciate your assistance with this.

That's unfortunate. I'm too new with this tool to see
easily what could be the problem.
It works ok as a single project.

My idea was to keep a completely clean separation
between manually edited files and automatically
generated files. By that means, at a moment's notice,
one can have a single zip file to stuff in a pocket
flash memory or something like that.
(I live in the third world. There are frequent
localized power failures, and street demonstrations.
I have had to go work in cyber-cafes in other parts of
town due to the former. I've had to grab a snapshot
and run with tear-gas seeping through the windows due
to the latter.)
I suppose your recommendation would be to collect such
a package using a 'dist' goal? Is that the usual
technique, then?
I'll try it that way and let you know.
As you pointed out before multiproject:clean demands a
simultaneous rebuild. Perhaps I shall have to create
an explicit ant 'clean' target.

Which is an insurmountable obstacle, isn't it?
Thanks very much again,
TC
