I've read this thread with a fair bit of dismay... it paints a much bleaker picture than intended.
Maven 1.1 has always been about incorporating m2 components, since about July last year when 1.0 was released. It's -not- about m2 being shiny and new and more interesting, it's just that it's not possible to effectively add features or even fix some bugs in the maven 1.0 base because there are so many things depending on those bugs existing now. The list for 1.1 are mostly really easy to fix. The only thing blocking the beta release for me is getting dom4j working again. The beta we were using had a fair share of bugs - upgrading has made <![CDATA[ ]]> sections disappear. dom4j and jaxen folk are helping, but apparently it's not trivial. I'd welcome any help in knocking off bugs or testing what is there right now. Please just pipe up on the dev. list - I'll commit to putting some more time in to review and apply patches.
