I use HSQL DB (http://hsqldb.org/) for testing with both Kodo JDO and
Hibernate.
It works well and is very fast.
This is what I have in my pom.xml

<dependency>
  <groupId>hsqldb</groupId>
  <artifactId>hsqldb</artifactId>
  <version>1.7.2.2 <http://1.7.2.2></version>
  <scope>test</scope>
 </dependency>
