Just to provide another way to run a project, that doesn't involve an
assembly descriptor, which may be of use until the incorporate that
plan into a new version of the Netbeans plugin/module/thingy.

Use the following:

<plugin>
  <groupId>org.apache.maven.plugins</groupId>
  <artifactId>maven-antrun-plugin</artifactId>
  <configuration>
    <tasks>
      <java fork="true" classname="com.foo.MainClass">
        <classpath refid="maven.runtime.classpath"/>
      </java>
    </tasks>
  </configuration>
</plugin>

And then run mvn antrun:run
