Another option is to to turn off the bash history and provide it like
this
mvn release:prepare
mvn release:perform -Dgpg.passphrase=$PASSPHRASE -Darguments="-
Dgpg.passphrase=$PASSPHRASE"
If you have an agent configured for gpg to popup a nice dialog or
something, you can also do:
-Dgpg.useAgent=true
