Haven't used Hardy, but most Linux distros still ship with GNU Java as the default, and it has numerous problems (such as parsing XML files). Run java -version, if you get something like: gij (GNU libgcj) version 4.1.1 20070105, loosely follow for example these instructions: http://daveshields.wordpress.com/2007/09/14/how-to-install-a-specific-version-of-java-on-ubuntu/to get Sun's Java or just get the tar from java.sun.com and install manually.
