After I read through the maven-install-plugin sources I saw what you ment.
I now simply have added the following section to the distribution pom.xml
<plugin>
<groupId>org.apache.maven.plugins</groupId>
<artifactId>maven-install-plugin</artifactId>
<configuration>
<createChecksum>true</createChecksum>
</configuration>
</plugin>
and now I get the sha1 and md5 created in my local repository on a simple mvn
install also.
