That's pretty much correct in case of recipient of the MM was "local",
i.e. in the same network. Otherwise MM is sent to the "foreign
network" using MM4 (SMTP based) protocol and that foreign network
takes care of futher delivery of MM.

Usually you don't need neither separate MM storage server nor DB since
Mbuni will store your message in the queue directory. Just set up
*-queue-directory correctly in your mbuni mmsc.conf file.
