I've seen such behavior with some phone / messages combinations too, and the behavior of the phone in response to a strange MM ranges from silently deleting it, downloading it again after each notification, or showing a "borken" message picture on the phone. I suggest you try the other way around first (sending a MM from the phone to an email address or to another phone), and then try to send the content back.
