Hi Lorry,

you need to enable ext3 support in the kernel and either build is statically or 
loadable as module. You should find it in the section "Filesystems". But I am not 100% 
sure if 2.4.7 already has ext3 support included. If not, then it is possible to mount 
a ext3 partition as ext2 partition, but you loose the journaling feature of ext3.

But I doubt that this problem is realy related to your X-Server not starting. Here I 
assume that not the correct support for your graphic card is enabled in your kernel.
