A new version of email will be added this weekend, these can indeed be used in the way you want. It will be a new addon for 1.6.x and default in 1.7. Im more than willing to work with a few beta testers to perfect this application.
If you want to beta test this send me email and ill point you to the correct parts where it will be in cvs/download starting monday.
