I believe that both components were authored and contributed separately.
As you noted, they each have specific strengths and weaknesses.

It'd be great if someone would contribute a patch for inputCalendar
that also provided the missing functionality of inputDate (it seems to
me that this would be easier than trying to have inputDate implement
the functionality of inputCalendar since patches to the inputCalendar
javascript occur almost weekly these days).

Until someone who needs that functionality jumps in and provides it,
you'll have to choose between the two (or a different component like
the jenia4Faces calendar), depending on your needs.
