Spec wants it to be final, I think there is no reason for that, it just does not make any sense, however there are two tricks if you want to extend it. We have used the second one and worked well but first one is much easier to try.
* Use a proxy instead and delegate to the actual faces servlet.
* Using AspectJ you can be able to modify the faces servlet.
