I think it depends on the complexity of your applications. Spring provides many facilities to provide the bridges between the layers of your applications. The good thing is that spring does not depend on any persistence framework, it has support for jdbc, hibernate, ibatis and etc.
Your persistence choice will vary, but for example if the application gets more complex and you decide to move from jdbc to hibernate then only thing needed is to change the spring's configuration.
