So, I removed the netbeans project dir from my existing project and tries to import it as a new PHP project with existing sources, but the IDE complains “Sources directory is already NetBeans project (maybe only in memory)” I se there was an outstanding issue in Netbeans from wayback where any xml files in the project that have the word “project” in them cause this to happen.

PHP isn't activated by default so needs to be activated before you can use it. There are 3 ways to do this.
