Hello Richard, I think there is no need for this. If you use independent layers, then you can switch them on and off without a request to the server. If you put these independent layers in one request, the switching have to produce a request.
I have build an own layercontrol for my openlayers client, where you can see this behavior. To turn off Openlayers Layers, you uncheck them. If you want to turn off one or more layers of one Openlayers Layer, you have to refresh the Openlayers layer and send a request to the server. http://gis.ibbeck.de/ginfo/ibbOLClient/OpenLayersClient.html I'm using popup windows for the layercontrol and other options. How would you offer the user 10 layers, allow them to turn on as many as they want, but still only make one request to the server?
